Two Decades of Research – More than 800 Clinical Studies

EYE-folate® comes from more than two decades of work to bring together the very best approaches and clinical support for better vision and eye health. We now sharethe insights gained from our work and years of experience.

The Active Folate Story

Homocysteine management is a true breakthrough in vascular eye health. Many people, have undetected elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels. Without management, high Hcy creates excess oxidative stress damaging the blood vessels leading to your eyes and brain. High Hcy also restricts the body’s efforts to repair blood vessel damage. Uncontrolled homocysteine creates a tough cycle of constant damage and restricted repair. This results in less blood flow and fewer nutrients to the eye and brain which creates loss of vision.

EYE-folate® uses metabolically active ingredients to manage homocysteine levels. The key ingredients are active folate (L-methylfolate such as found in leafy green veggies) and (P5P) B6 and Methylcobalamin. This combination is shown to reduce homocysteine and restore normal methylation in the brain and the eyes. See the chart below to note that common folic acid cannot accomplish this methylation step. Folic acid does NOT cross the blood brain barrier or the retinal barrier – in fact, excess folic acid literally competitively inhibits the process of active folate (L-methylfolate) crossing correctly.

The Hidden BH4 Trap Story

Another little-known methylation trap in the brain is associated with elevated homocysteine creating a reduced supply of BH4. BH4 is a folate-dependent enzyme essential for the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and melatonin. Lack of L-methylfolate (or excess folic acid) creates this BH4 trap. DHFR is also a critical component to this BH4 process. Accordingly, taking EYE-folate® provides the nutrients to support the BH4 process as necessary for good vision.

The Lutein and Zeaxanthin Story

Much of the early research from AREDS (U.S. National Institutes of Health) demonstrated the value of both Lutein and Zeaxanthin for maintaining good vision.

The Zinc Story

Numerous studies, particularly AREDS1 (2001) and AREDS2 (2013), have affirmed that 80mg of zinc with 2mg of copper, taken daily, seem to be the most effective approach to stabilizing long term retinal health. A few “pennies” a day help maintain good vision.

The Vitamin C Story

Vit C is a critical antioxidant. Known to prevent scurvy, Vit C is also essential for eye health and good vision. Clinical support for Vit C was affirmed by AREDS and AREDS2.
